Introduction to 3D Motion Analysis
From something as seemingly simple as standing still, to something as complex as the golf swing, understanding the science behind how the body moves unlocks our potential to greatly enhance player performance. The use of three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis systems allow us to physically see and measure the movements of the body in real time. While the underlying technology used to capture 3D motion analysis data is complex, using the information it provides can be quite simple.
In this lesson, you will learn about the extensive use of various technologies within sports, how 3D technology was developed, how 3D is applied in both sport and clinical settings, and the specific impact it has on the sport of golf. In later lessons, you will learn specifically how 3D motion analysis technology works, how to analyze the data it provides, and how to apply it to golf instruction to both improve player performance and decrease the likelihood of injury.
Upon completion of this section, you will be able to:
- Define 3D motion analysis
- Recall basic facts about the history of motion analysis
- Identify applications of 3D motion analysis systems
- Give examples of performance analysis equipment used in other sports
- Explain the opportunities and benefits of using 3D motion analysis systems in golf instruction
